Abstract
PERNAS GOMEZ, Marta and ARENCIBIA FLORES, Lourdes. Efectos sobre la salud de la exposición crónica al humo del tabaco en fumadores y no fumadores. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 1998, vol.14, n.2, pp. 180-184. ISSN 1561-3038.
It is stressed that harmful health effects of chronic exposure to tobacco smoke affect almost all the functional systems of the human body, and damage hit both passive and active smokers in different ways. It is also pointed that passive smoking in children is particularly important as well as passive smoking in adults at home and at working place. Community physicians'prevention and promotion work should focus on children and adults alike. It is stated that present knowledge in this regard shows that imbalance of protease-antiprotease functions in lungs is the basis of important morphological and functional disorders. This imbalance is more likely in persons with intermediate and severe alpha-1 antitripsin defficiency phenotypes, but it is also favoured by a double mechanism in subjects exposed to tobacco smoke in a passive or active way
