Abstract

A prospective study was made on 654 diabetic patients using the same protocol for all of them. They came from the primary health care areas of "Federico Capdevila", "René Bedia" and "Mario Muñoz" polyclinics located in Boyeros municipality; "Louis Pasteur" and "Turcios Lima" polyclinics situated in 10 de Octubre municipality and "Bernardo Posse" polyclinic located in San Miguel del Padrón municipality, in the period from January,1987 to December, 2000. The prevailing age group was 45-64 years-old (47%) and the predominant clinical duration was over 10 years (51%).Obesity in females prevailed in 49,2% of cases and diabetes mellitus in 91,4%. Glibenclamide was the most used therapy (39%), satisfactory level of control was the highest. A deficient diabetic education was shown in the fact that 24,5% of patients went to courses on diabetes but only 38% performed daily Benedict tests. The rate of complications in the series was the following: ketoacidosis 5,5%; retinopathy 23%; nephropathy 7,3%; neuropathy 12%; blood hypertension 52,2%; coronary cardiopathy 29% and amputation 3%. There were 14 patients (21%) who presented with unilateral or bilateral blindness.
