Abstract

Our paper was aimed at determining the prevalence of low vision and blindness at "elpidio Berovides" polyclinics, Lisa municipality, Havana City and also finding out different epidemiological aspects related to these diseases. The variables taken were: age, sex, pathological family history and personal history, both general and ocular, and lastly psychosocial effects on these patients. Tables and graphs helped to analyze these data. As a result of our research work, we found a prevalence rate of low vision equals to 230 x 100, 000 pop whereas blind rate is 40 x 100 000 pop, affecting mainly patients over 60 years. The fundamental causes of these diseases were glaucoma, 16%; degenerative myopia, 14.8% and other retinal diseases. All these patients presented with restrictions from the psychosocial viewpoints.
