Abstract

DE LA NOVAL GARCIA, Reinaldo et al. A program to control hypertension in “Plaza” municipality. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2005, vol.21, n.5-6, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3038.

Summary A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in “Plaza” municipality to determine the prevalence of arterial hypertension, as well as the quality of the medical attention received by the hypertensive patients. To this end, it was applied a survey of prevalence (n = 1 348) and another one of validation of the quality of the medical care given to the hypertensive (n =500). The selection of the sample was made by an equiprobability single-stage cluster sampling, in which the clusters were the 272 physicians' offices of Plaza de la Revolución municipality. Arterial hypertension is a modifiable coronary risk factor and its high incidence and deficient control influence in a negative way on the morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. To evaluate the association among qualitative variables it was used the chi-square test. .It was considered significant when the probability was p < 0.05 with a confidence interval of 95%. The prevalence of arterial hypertension was 37 %. 7.9 % of the surveyed population presented an ischemic heart disease. Half of the surveyed hypertensives were adhered to treatment and among them the number of patients under control was higher (45.6 %) than in the non-adhered (38.6 %). The control was also greater among those who had an adequate treatment and took medicines daily. This was a significant relation.

Keywords : Control of arterial hypertension; validation of the quality of medical care.
