An observational, analytical case-control study of all women from the health area of “Bernardo Posee” Polyclinic, in “San Miguel del Padrón” municipality, that had a newborn with a weight under 2 500 g from 1995 to 2004, was conducted. This group was the study sample. A control group of women with a weight over or equal to 2 500 g was selected at random.Statistical tests were applied to determine the relative risk of each factor. It was proved in this reasearch that smoking and vaginal sepsis due to trichomona and/or bacterial vaginitis are, among others, the antecedents and risks that more frequently contributed to this indicator in our health area. An incidence of obstetric history of 2 or more abortions, nulliparity and an intergenesic period of less than a year were also observed.

Keywords : Low birth weight infant; risk factors; primary health care; preventive medicine.
