Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To determine if socioeconomic factors influenced on approval of the first subject in Medicine career. METHODS: In a cross-sectional and descriptive study it was determined the geographical move from its home, the unsatisfied basic needs (UBN), and the working activity of 497 new students registered by a voluntary survey and the students approved the subject were registered too. RESULTS: Geographic move and the UBNs were associated with the subject approval (p< 0.05 and p < 0.03) and none of worker student approved the subject. The UBNs created the conditions to student to work. Unfavorable socioeconomic factors affected the student academic development, preventing the continuation of their higher education studies. Thus, implementation of assistance systems to students with unfavorable conditions could have positive effects on its university performance.
