Abstract

YANCE RAMIREZ, Luis Leonardo; VALDIVIA TORRES, Mercedes  and  BELTRAN DOMINGUEZ, María Isabel. Excellence is possible in the language departments of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana. Educ Med Super [online]. 2011, vol.25, n.4, pp. 525-530. ISSN 0864-2141.

Eight basic principles of management are stated by Peters and Waterman in their bestseller In Search of Excellence (1982). These principles are based on a theory that has passed the scientific test imposed by the time and has been used in the management of English departments as foreign language teaching as well as in the business world of the big companies. The authors of the paper made reflections on how these principles could be used in the English department in Cuba and the possible advantages for the English teaching in the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana. Is it possible to reach excellence in language departments of this Institute? At the time when we are looking for improvement of health services in our country in all the areas of a field so important for our society, the role of university department must generally respond to this essential goal.

Keywords : excellence; principles; improvement; management.
