Abstract

The intraocular pressure, the signs of pigment dispersion, the excavation-papilla relation and the alterations of the visual field were initially evaluated in 13 eyes with diagnosis of pigment dispersion syndrome and 5 with pigmentary glaucoma. Nd YAG laser perypheral iridotomy was performed in patients with this syndrome, whereas those who presented pigmentary glaucoma underwent trabeculectomy. They were checked every 4 months up to 24 months. 11 eyes with concave iris showed flattening of the iris and 2 with convex iris did not vary with laser iridotomy. An evident reduction of the signs of pigment dispersion was observed in the 18 eyes. The intraocular pressure remained stable and it improved in those treated with trabeculectomy. In the pigment dispersion syndrome it is very frequent the concave configuration of the iris; the iridotomy flattens it and avoids the iridozonular friction, reducing the dispersion and deposition of pigment that prevents the rise of the intraocular pressure and pigmentary glaucoma.
