Abstract
LOPEZ HERNANDEZ, Silvia et al. Keratoplasy: Clinical characteristics and evaluation of results. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2008, vol.21, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3070.
A retrospective longitudinal and descriptive study was conducted at "Ramón Pando Ferrer" Institute of Ophthalmology to describe the behaviour of some characteristics of cornea donors and recipients from January to December, 2006. Three hundred and twenty eight corneas from 178 donors were used for 332 transplants. The patients aged 40 to 80 years were predominant in both groups. The main cause of death was acute myocardial infarction. Death-to-enucleation time was below 6 hours in 92 % of cases and 62.2 % of transplantations were made within the 7 days of corneal preservation. The most frequently indicated was bullous keratoplasty with 28.6 % of cases and 70.8 % of keratoplasties were performed for optic reasons. Revascularization of recipient cornea was the most common risk factor. Epithelial complications prevailed and the majority of grafts were transparent in the first three months of surgery.
