Abstract

CABRERA MARTINEZ, Abel  and  CABRERA MARTINEZ, José A.. Use of LASEK with Mitomycin C to treat high myopic defects. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2009, vol.22, n.2, pp. 1-7. ISSN 1561-3070.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the refractive outcome in patients with high refractive myopic defects who were operated on by laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis plus Mitomycin C (LASEK + MC). METHODOS: A prospective cross-sectional study was performed in 47 eyes. The sample was selected from the whole number of patients who went to our Implant-Refractive Surgery Department. Taking into account their previous informed consent, the referred technique was used to correct ametropy by additionally using Cuban-made 0,02 % Mitomycin C for two minutes in the transoperative stage. To evaluate the outcome of the study, several tests were conducted before and after surgery. RESULTS: The refractive results found in operated patients were very encouraging since all refractive defects were corrected and the visual quality was very favourable according to the visual tests. Also, the rate of complications was very low. CONCLUSIONS: Corneal surgery with laser through the method LASEK plus MC proved to be a very safe reliable technique. The final refractive results were very encouraging in patients with high myopic defects and thus, their quality of life significantly improved.
