METHODS: A retrospective analytical (case-control) study was performed in which those children with diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity were evaluated against a group of children without this disease (control group), who were selected through simple random sampling in the health care area under the teaching polyclinics of Playa in the same period of time. The control group was assessed in the specialized retinopathy of prematurity service to rule out the existence of the disease. RESULTS: The prevalence of the disease was 0.03 %, with annual average incidence of 9.1 affected children per one thousand births. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, risk factors for onset of retinopathy of prematurity were the following variables, that is, Caucasian, gestational age under 37 weeks, weight lower than 2 500 g, neonatal sepsis, respiratory distress, use of oxygen and blood transfusions.
