OBJECTIVES: To prove that the existence of risk factors for pterygium in fishermen from "La Coloma" people´s council has an effect on the higher prevalence of the disease; to identify the age group and the sex with higher frequency of pterygium as well as demonstrate that the length of service as fisherman is associated with this disease. METHODS: A retrospective, observational, cross-sectional applied and analytical (case-control) study was carried out in the people´s council "La Coloma" from Pinar del Río province, from April to June 2006. A sample of 98 patients divided into the case and the control groups was made up. The methods used were summary statistics (percentages), the odds ratios, the Chi-square method and the confidence intervals. Graphs and tables reflected the collected information. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that 40-49 years-old group was the most affected, the male sex prevailed and that the occupation as fisherman is a possible risk factor for pterygium. The length of service was considered as a possible risk factor for pterygium and its level of severity.
