Abstract

TORRES LEYVA, Midiala  and  EXPOSITO FERNANDEZ, Yadira. Ethical aspects in the diagnosis and treatment of the retinopathy of prematurity. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2010, vol.23, suppl.1, pp. 624-631. ISSN 1561-3070.

In the neonatal scientific work, a number of ethical problems come up to which the health professionals can not be indifferent since they have an impact on the decision-making and the quality of life of newborns. The quality of perinatal care and the advances in neonatology have brought about the survival of extremely premature babies, therefore the frequency and severity of retinopathy of prematurity, important cause of the preventable blindness in children, have increased. Some ethical aspects such as ethical responsibility, information, communication, and informed consent connected to diagnosis and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity were addressed in this paper.

Keywords : retinopathy of prematurity; ethics.
