Abstract

INGA SAMANIEGO, Jean; MANTARI LAUREANO, José; CHAVEZ AVILA, Francisco  and  CHARCA MAMANI, Samuel. Benefits and risks of glaucoma drainage devices for glaucoma treatment. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.2, pp. 1-12. ISSN 1561-3070.

The glaucoma treatment may be started with drugs, followed by surgeries or implantation of drainage devices. Drainage devices are used to treat refractory glaucomas (they do not respond to medical treatment or surgeries) when trabeculectomy fails to control intraocular pressure. There is a range of designs that basically consist of a tube that drains aqueous humor from the anterior or posterior chamber to a plate located in the equatorial area of the eye. Likewise, drainage devices have made significant progress in recent years, varying the mechanism of action, materials, dimensions and indications of use. This paper provides information on the state of the art of glaucoma, as well as a systematic literature review on the main drainage devices, describing its mechanism of operation, main advantages, effectiveness measured according to the variation of intraocular pressure and the most important complications found in each study.

Keywords : drainage devices; glaucoma; trabeculectomy; intraocular pressure.
