Abstract

GRAN ALVAREZ, Miriam; ALVAREZ LAUZERIQUE, María Esther  and  ROQUE NABUT, Sandra. La mortalidad en cuba según experiencia previa y futura. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 1996, vol.22, n.2, pp. 3-4. ISSN 1561-3127.

The purpose of this study was to show some applications of the statistics of mortality based on the concepts of excessive and premature mortality. To make this analysis, it was considered Cuba's mortality in 1995, and the indicators of standardized mortality ratio, and the ratio of years of life potentially lost were calculated for all causes and for those causes selected, comparing them with mortality in Cuba in 1981, to know the achievements obtained, and with a developed country, Canada in 1992, to determine the portential reserves of reduction. Deaths occurred in Cuba during 1995 accounted for 98.1 % of the expected if the mortality of 1981 would habe been maintained, 2.0 % of deaths had been avoided. On comparing them with Canada, with more favorable rates, they exceeded in 18.4 % with a great reserve of reduction, but with real possibilities to attain them, since most of the causes analyzed may be prevented by taking measures to modify habits and life styles.

Keywords : MORTALITY; CUBA.
