It is emphasized the fact that different socioeconomic and political factors that take part in the maternal mortality exert a direct influence on the development of the health system, and that without them it would have been impossible to attain the results achieved in the health sphere. It is showed how from a ratio of maternal death of 137.8 x 100 000 live births from 1950 to 1959, it is obtained a ratio of maternal death of 21.2 in 2004, which accounts for a reduction of 78.3 % in the studied period.
