Abstract

CASTANEDA ABASCAL, Ileana Elena et al. Synthetic indicators for measuring the gender differences in the Cuban social environment. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2013, vol.39, n.4, pp. 665-678. ISSN 0864-3466.

Introduction: the comprehensive measure of the concept gender or of some of its components is difficult on account of its great complexity, so the synthetic indicators including the variables related to gender differences in each society are useful to this end. Objective: to present the indicators created for Cuba and called equality indexes for ages 15 to 19 years, 20 to 49 years, 50 to 64 years and over 64. Methods: the four steps were detailed to estimate equality indexes and their application in three selected doctor´s offices. Results: the steps for estimation of equality indexes were shown by using unreal values to facilitate understanding of calculations. The use of equality indexes under real conditions reveals that the value changed, depending on the specific life conditions of the area where they were estimated. The results were similar when they were estimated in the same place at two different times. Conclusions: there is a procedure for estimating the equality indexes in each phase of life cycle, arranged by shaped steps where the differences between men and women in various life aspects were taken into account. The final results were in line with the characteristics of life conditions in the places where they were applied and consistent throughout the time.
