Abstract

GARCIA MACHIN, Ernesto  and  GRANDA IBARRA, Antonio. Proposal for the betterment of the social accomplishment of health and safety of workers in Cuba. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2013, vol.39, n.4, pp. 689-707. ISSN 0864-3466.

The process of changes and achievements in the field of occupational health and safety that occurred from 1959 to the 90´s were described. As a result of the economic crisis or the so-called "special period"in the 1990´s, this activity deteriorated and its development was restrained. Despite the worsening of the working conditions, the occupational health indicators decreased since exposure was lower as a result of less work activity. Fourteen aspects were suggested to work with at this time of changes in the economic strategy of the country, since it is necessary to comply with the occupational health and safety principles if a sustainable development and the rise of the quality of life of workers are to be achieved. It was warned that business changes taking place in the country cannot be examined in the same style of the capitalist businesses, and the managers were encouraged to increase productivity, but at the same time to keep low risk levels and to permanently improve the working conditions. The managing people in charge of this field were urged to take advantage of these crucial moments and, on the basis of ethics, science, and political wisdom, to continue developing occupational health and safety and to offer safer and decent work posts to Cuban workers.

Keywords : Occupational health and safety; occupational health; risk management; workers´ health.
