Abstract

PUPO AVILA, Noria Liset  and  SEGREDO PEREZ, Alina M. Sexual and reproductive health contents included in the undergraduate and postgraduate formation of the Cuban physician. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2013, vol.39, suppl.1, pp. 974-987. ISSN 0864-3466.

The objective of this paper was to identify the approach to sexual and reproductive health in the undergraduate and postgraduate formation of the Cuban physician. A descriptive study was made with theoretical methods of analysis and synthesis of literature and documentary reviews including the curricula of medical studies, of the general comprehensive medicine (family medicine) specialty, of the master's degree courses on health promotion and education and of the diploma's courses on research in sexual and reproductive health promotion. Seven subjects of the curricula in the medical career deal with sexual and reproductive health issues. The curriculum of the general comprehensive medicine specialty has 28 modules and 11 of them include themes about sexual and reproductive health, accounting for 39%. In the curricula of diploma's and master's degree courses on research, it was found that they are aimed at creating research skills in health professionals to address any topic under study. The analyzed curricula comprise contents about sexual and reproductive health that guarantee the development of the required skills in the undergraduate and postgraduate formation of the Cuban physician. However, the medical studies should include topics to create research skills in the field of sexual and reproductive health, since research is one of the functions to be developed in professional practice.

Keywords : sexual and reproductive health; formative programs; curriculum; Cuba.
