Abstract

DIAZ, Acela et al. POTYVIRUSES: GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS, SITUATION OF THE DIAGNOSIS AND DETERMINATION OF ITS PRESENCE IN PEPPER CROPS IN CUBA. Rev. Protección Veg. [online]. 2010, vol.25, n.2, pp. 69-79. ISSN 2224-4697.

The genus Potyvirus is responsible for important economic losses in the pepper crop (Capsicum annuum L.). Members of this genus can be transmitted by seeds and by more than 25 species of aphids in a non-persistent manner, what is a challenge for the development of effective control strategies. The diagnosis of these viral entities has been approached by different techniques such as the analysis of symptoms in specific plants, electronic microscopy, serological and inmunoenzymatic techniques, and even by using molecular methodologies of new generations. Due to the impact of the damages caused by potyviruses on most of the crops of economic interest and the increase of these infections around the world, the present paper refers to aspects about the main characteristics of this viral genus, in addition to preliminary results on the determination of its presence in the pepper crop in Cuba.

Keywords : potyvirus; diagnosis; pepper.
