Abstract

DIAZ, Acela; QUINONES, Madelaine; HERNANDEZ, Annia  and  DEL BARRIO, Gloria. EVALUATION OF ANALITICAL PARAMETERS FOR THE MOLECULAR DETECTION OF POTYVIRUSES AFFECTING PEPPER CROPS IN CUBA. Rev. Protección Veg. [online]. 2010, vol.25, n.2, pp. 80-87. ISSN 2224-4697.

The genus Capsicum (Solanaceae) is originally from the American continent and includes around 25 species, but only 5 are used in agriculture. The environmental conditions in the development of this crop, the kind of exploitation, and the different cultivars have led to a large diversity of diseases causing important reductions in pepper production. Among them, the viral diseases are the first difficulty for the development of the crop. At the same time, pepper plants are primarily affected by potyviruses (Potyviridae family). The main goal of this work was the validation of a technique for the molecular diagnosis of potyviruses using RT-PCR with generics primers. The results showed that RT-PCR was efficient for potyvirus diagnosis in pepper plants with analytical parameters higher than 97%. It is the first time that a molecular technique is validated in Cuba for potyvirus diagnosis
