Abstract

NZINGA, Manuel  and  SURIS, Moraima. Characterization of farms producing tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) in Namibe province as a base for pest management. Rev. Protección Veg. [online]. 2016, vol.31, n.1, pp. 29-34. ISSN 2224-4697.

This work was carried out at eight farms producing tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) in the province of Namibe (Angola) to characterize their socioeconomic status as a basis for the design of a pest management program. The diagnosis was made through surveys following the format set and visiting each farm. General information about the producer and the farm were recorded as indicators. The results showed that the average age of the owners or managers of the farms was 50 years, all male, with a level of secondary education (87.50%). The general status found was low availability of agricultural area in two municipalities, Namibe 12.49% and 1.50% in Bibala with an exploitation of 45.33% and 71.74, respectively; limited use of plant and animal diversity, with a larger area of temporary crops (177 ha); insufficient development of traditional crops; reduced availability of means of production and scarse diversification of irrigation systems; low yields of tomato (15. 67 t ha-1); lack of appropriate production and expenses records; deficiencies with the commercial network; reduced permanent workforce per unit area (0.74 worker.ha-1) and low remuneration (USD 95.00 / month). By the SWOT matrix developed, it was concluded that the strategy to develop was of an offensive type, by which the actions that allow raising the efficiency of the production systems surveyed are improved and/or corrected.
