Abstract

PAZ LATORRE, Elvia Isabel. Acupunctural treatment vs bell´s peripheral facial paralisis. AMC [online]. 1998, vol.2, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1025-0255.

A clinical assay on acupuntural treatment effectiveness in 170 patients with Bell´s peripheral facial paralysis was performed at the Natural and Traditional Medicine Clinic ¨Carlos J Finlay¨from January to July 1996. This sample was assigned to two 85-patient groups a control group and a study group. Treatments consisted of steroids for the control group and acupuncture for the study group. Therapy results from both groups were compared as to motor recovery, taste impairment if present, and complications due to either treatment. Findings indicate that an earlier motor recovery excluding taste impairment, which is related to prognosis, less severe complications, and a 15,96 % over-efectiveness were achieved by acupuntural therapy in comparison to steroids medical treatment.

Keywords : peripheral facial paralysis; acupuntural treatment.
