The study of temporomandibular joint disorders is based more in testimonies and clinical opinions than in the science itself. These disorders involve a member of clinical conditions including masticatory muscles and/or temporomandibular articulation, and associated structures. A review about concept evolcution and diagnostic classification was carried aout. Concluding, temporomandibular joint disorders are the results of multiple factors and do not rely upon specific morphologic criterio nor occlusal relationships; signs and symptoms are independent of treatment, for which a multidisciplinary managment is required.
