Abstract

A prospective study in 4 192 patients admitted at least 24 hours, in the Intermediate Care Unit (ICU) our hospital, was carried out. The following measure of nosocomial infection incidence: accumulated incidence, incidence density and infection rates associated to diagnostic -therapeutic devices, were calculated. The annual rate was of 6.5 and 7.2 for each 100 discharges during 2000 and 2001, respectively. The most frequent nosocomial infections were in this order, bacteriemias and urinary infections. Pneumonia rate associated to breather was of 38.6/1000 days of mechanic ventilation, that of bacteriemia associated to centrovenous catheter of 23,4/1000 days of catheter and that of urinary infection associated to vesical catheterism of 14,7/1000 days probing. The objective of the study was to investigative the nosocomial infection in the ICU of our hospital.
