Abstract

A descriptive prospective study was carried out in 88 patients with diabetes mellitus older than 15 years, coming from the Endocrinology service at Martin Chang Puga general Hospital of Nuevitas, Camagüey during the period from February 1st to March 3 ed, 2002; so as to determine presence and severity of the periodontal disease and its relation with the level of oral health, evolution time of the disease and level of metabolic control. It was proved that 18, 10 % hadn’t periodontal disease. Out of the patients with cotrolled diabetes, gingivitis was observed in 52, 20 %. Those with light disorder had gingivitis in 33, 30 % and those with severe disorder, advanced periodontitis with 34, 80 %. All had incorrect hygiene. Metabolic disorder, age and level of oral hygiene positively correlated with the severity of the periodontal disease.
