Abstract

CASTRO GUEVARA, José Enrique; HERNANDEZ MOORE, Elizabeth; BUENO RODRIGUEZ, José Carlos  and  AGUILAR ATANAY, Dayamnelis. Esophageal atresia: prevalence in Camagüey. AMC [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.4, pp. 12-21. ISSN 1025-0255.

A descriptive study of all children born with esophageal atresia was conducted in the Province of Camagüey from 1995 to 2000. The prevalence rate was 1 per 2194 children born alive. Out of the 27 esophageal atresia patient, 25 (92, 5 %) had a distal thracheoesophageal fistula. Mortality among children under weight 1800 gramms was reported high due to the need for artificial ventilation, and to associated malformations. Global mortality rate was 40, 7 %. We conclude that the esophageal atresia frequency rate is low in Cuba given a State- sponsored comprehensive healthcare program whose mortality rate is as low as that of industrialized countries
