Abstract

Background: A descriptive study was conducted from March to September 2004 at three homes for the seniors at the Municipality of Camagüey. The 48-elder sample was surveyed through a questionnaire structured in such a manner as to assess awareness of mouth care and periodontal diseases. The Russell periodontal index was used. Risk factors for local and general periodontal diseases, chiefly periodontitis, were manifest in 95. 8 % of elders, half of them awareness on the subject, (this was true at least of half of them) was graded as poor. Most frequent local and general risk factors were dental plaque and tartar, along with diabetes mellitus, respectively.
