Abstract

SUAREZ RAMIREZ, Orlando; FERRER HERRERA, Ismael; MEDINA QUEZADA, Alexis  and  LLANES RODRIGUEZ, Alberto. Intercrisis treatment in asthmatic patients being cared for family physicians. AMC [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.1, pp. 106-115. ISSN 1025-0255.

Background:  A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted in the year 2003 to assess compliance with guidelines for intercrisis treatment of the 173 asthmatic patients cared for at two family physicians offices of the “Ignacio Agramonte” Polyclinic. Clinical  records of  both  individuals  and  of their families  were  the primary  source of data which were  transferred  to  a survey  sheet  designed specifically to such  an end. Variables like age group, sex, degree of severity, compliance with intercrisis treatment guidelines, frequency rate of symptoms, number of times care was sought at the emergency service, and number of hospital admissions were processed in a computer. Asthmatics classed as mild intermittent prevailed (43.4 %), whereas as 72.3 % did not follow the intercrisis guidelines, of them 28 % showed continuing symptoms. There fouths outs of asthmatics that did not follow the intercrisis treatment guidelines showed symptoms, sough care at the emergency service, and were admitted.
