Abstract

Introduction:

Chronic kidney disease is a serious public health problem worldwide, its terminal stage requires treatment with renal replacement therapy such as hemodialysis. Objective: To characterize patients with chronic renal disease requiring hemodialysis in Camagüey province.

Methods:

A descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study was carried out with the objective of characterizing patients with chronic kidney disease who require hemodialysis in the nephrology services of the Camagüey province during the year 2022. The universe of study consisted of 438 patients with the diagnosis of chronic kidney disease and the discretionary sample was made up of 215 patients who underwent hemodialysis in the Nephrology Service of the Manuel Ascunce Domenech University Hospital, Nephrology Service of the Eduardo Agramonte Piña Provincial Pediatric Hospital, Nephrology Service of the Municipal General Hospital of Nuevitas Martin Chang Puga and Nephrology Service of the Municipal General Hospital of Florida.

Results:

In the sample, hemodialysis patients with chronic kidney disease of the Camagüey municipality, male sex and age group of 55-59 years, whose fundamental causes were associated with arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus, predominated.

Conclusions:

The characterization of chronic kidney disease from the sociodemographic approach has an important role in its comprehensive approach at the primary health level.
