The publication of journals in electronic format represented a change in the way that articles are published and favored the use of publishing alternatives, such as continuous publication, which help scientific results to appear quickly online for consultation and citation.1

The main characteristic of continuous publication is the agility in publishing articles, which are available to readers after completion of the peer review process, proofreading, philological correction, translation and layout;1,2) thus, the journal articles are published continuously, without the need to wait for the complete integration of issues or serial editions.1

This modality accelerates the process of scientific communication.2) Among its main advantages we can mention:3

  • shorter submission and publication times for articles.

  • greater immediateness in the dissemination of scientific information.

  • reduced risk of research data being outdated at the time of publication.

  • increased visibility of published articles.

  • improved editorial flows.

  • increase of updated information for the user to read and cite.

This modality allows articles to be published in a single volume, in an open issue and in several open issues simultaneously.4) The VacciMonitor Journal adopted the continuous publication modality as of January 2023; articles are published in an annual volume.
