Abstract

Introduction:
Ending January 2020, the World Health Oganization declared the outbrake of the new coronavirus, labeled (COVID-19), as a worldwide public health emergency and in March 11, on the same year, was declared as pandemic.
Objective:
To characterize the clinical and epidemiologic features in patients with COVID-19.
Method:
a descriptive and retrospective study concerning clinical and epidemiologic features of 492 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 at the Policlínico Universitario “Emilio Daudinot Bueno”, in Guantánamo, was carried out. Variables studied were as follow: age groups, sex, district area, source of infection, presence or absence of signs and symptoms (fever, cough, dyspnea, general malaise, sore throat, headache, nasal congestion, anosmia and low back pain.
Results:
There was a slight female predominance, with a predominance in patients older than 60 years old (22.35%), Pastorita district was reported with the highest number of cases (60.16%). Transmission of infection in the community was the predominance source of infection (74.59%). Fever was the most important clinical manifestation found among patients with symptoms (20.93%).
Conclusions:
Get to know and understanding the clinical and epidemiologic features associated with COVID-19 are very important for the adequate implementation of the established protocols performed to control the disease in the primary health care, involving aggressively in this process, the community and the government institutions.
