Abstract

MANET LAHERA, Luis Ricardo; POVEDA MARCHECO, Aimée; RIVERO SANDOVAL, Vivian  and  ROPERO POVEDA, Eduardo. Nosocomial infection in newborns admitted in a neonatal intensive care service. MEDISAN [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.4, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1029-3019.

A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 48 newborns admitted due to nosocomial infections in the Neonatal Intensive Care Service of "Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso" Teaching General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba during 2005 was carried out. Most of the patients (85,5%) presented sepsis at birth and the most common infection was bacteriemia, followed by bronchopneumonias. The culture of endotracheal secretions constituted the sample of more positivity and among the isolated microorganisms with more frequency there were the Klebsiella and the positive coagulasa estaphylococcus. It was confirmed that the less effective antibiotics against the Gram-positive germs turned out to be penicillin and ceftriaxone; and against the Gram-negative, the aminoglycoside.

Keywords : nosocomial infections; newborns; connatal sepsis; bacteriemia; bronchopneumonias; Gram-negative and Gram-positive microorganisms; neonatal intensive care service.
