Abstract

BELL SANTOS, Héctor. High Blood Pressure leading to cerebrovascular disease due to non-accomplishment of the drug treatment plan. MEDISAN [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.2, pp. 204-208. ISSN 1029-3019.

A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in 210 patients with high blood pressure, belonging to "Dr. Carlos Juan Finlay" polyclinic in Songo La Maya, from December, 2009 to May, 2010, out of which 43 were admitted in the cerebrovascular service of "Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso" teaching general hospital in Santiago de Cuba due to a stroke. The result was that 130 members of the case material (61,9%) were following treatment in an irregular way and that only 72 (34,2%) knew the names of the drugs they were taking. The main cause for quitting the regular therapy was that most of the affected patients only took the pills when they began to feel the clinical manifestations of the disease.

Keywords : high blood pressure; stroke; medical treatment; primary health care; secondary health care.
