An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in 98 patients with lip and palate malformations, attended by the multidisciplinary team of the Southern Children Hospital of Santiago de Cuba, from January 2000 to the same month of 2009, with the purpose of characterizing them according to clinical and epidemiological variates of interest to research. Standard deviation and percentage were used for calculating qualitative and quantitative variates, as well as the independence chi-square test to identify the statistically significant association between the criteria of interest. Congenital lip and alveolopalatal malformations (58.1%), females (55.1%), mother's diseases during pregnancy (18.4%) as the most common risk factor, and Santiago de Cuba municipality as the place of higher incidence predominated in the series.
