Introduction: nosocomial infection is that which the patient acquires when he is admitted to a health institution. Objective: to identify the risk factors of nosocomial infection in patients admitted in an intensive care unit. Methods: a case-control study was carried out, in patients assisted in the Intensive Care Unit in "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes del Castillo" University General Hospital, in Bayamo, Granma, from January to December, 2011. Results: in the bivariate statistical analysis just sex did not constitute a risk factor for nosocomial infection, while the multivariate analysis showed that the independent factors were the hospital stay, the use of nasogastric probe, age and coma. Conclusions: the aforementioned variables constituted risk factors for nosocomial infection in the above mentioned intensive care unit.
