An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of 18 patients with diagnosis of acute chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, to whom the protocol of non invasive mechanical ventilation was applied and who were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of "Dr. Ambrosio Grillo Portuondo" Provincial Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, was carried out from January, 2012 to the same month of 2014, in order to describe the effects of this ventilation. After 24 hours of the treatment, breathing, heart frequencies and mean blood pressure decreased, with an increase of Glasgow coma scale, and the obtained hemogasometric values evidenced favorable changes. The mentioned ventilation constituted an effective therapeutic option in these patients
