The Municipal Information Centers in Villa Clara province were created to strengthen the structure of the National Health Information System. Its initial purpose was to guarantee the scientific-technical and information assurance required by professionals and technicians in primary health care. The province immediately undertook the technical and methodological actions necessary to carry out this task progressively; the first territory where this type of institution was founded was in Caibarién, whose later denomination was Municipal Reference Libraries. The development of these libraries has been characterized by the effective implementation of continuous transformation processes, the introduction of new technologies, the preparation of their human resources and the implementation of new programs for the development of informational competencies.
