Introduction:
periodontal disease and cardiovascular diseases are chronic inflammatory conditions that are epidemiologically associated; both have a polymicrobial etiology.
Objective:
to describe the possible association between chronic inflammatory periodontal disease and cardiovascular diseases.
Methods:
an updated review of the available literature was conducted. Articles were identified through automated database searches such as PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar from January to October 2018. Forty scientific texts, written in Spanish and English, published between 2012 and 2018 were selected: 37 of them were scientific journal articles and 3 books.
Conclusions:
numerous epidemiological studies and reviews support the association between periodontal diseases and cardiovascular diseases, regardless of the confounding factors.
