ROMERO GARCIA, Armando R et al. Clinical Epidemiological Peculiarities in Patients with Cardiac Pacing. CCM [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.4, pp. 443-451. ISSN 1560-4381.

Introduction: pacemaker therapy is an effective and optimal treatment for patients with severe bradyarrhythmia, which improves prognosis and quality of life. Objective: to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients undergoing pacemaker implantation. Methods: a retrospective and series of cases study in 860 patients who received a pacemaker between January 2007 and December 2009 was carried out. Data were collected through indications, surgical procedure, and type of stimulation, implementation pathways, surgical time, complications and origin. The data were showed in tables. Results:  the age group between 60-79 years of both sexes prevailed (51.7%), the atrioventricular block third degree was the most common indication (50%), followed by sick sinus syndrome (37%); first implants accounted for 88.3% and 11.7% spares. The unicameral mode with 67% and VVI - VVIR with 53% were the most common indications. Serious complications were at 0.9% and no deaths were reported, the cephalic vein implantation to 64.2% and operating time between 30-60 minutes for 64.2% predominated in this series. Outpatient surgery reported in over 40% of cases. Conclusions: the number of patients requiring electrical stimulation continues to increase in Holguín, elderly patients predominated with atrioventricular complete and sinus node disease, and good results have been obtained with few complications and deaths were not reported. The authors recommended to improve the work of the surgical team to provide high quality service
