Abstract

Introduction: the adoption of a gluten-free diet is the main therapeutic measure in celiac disease. Objective: to assess the evolution of nutritional status and villous atrophy, in celiac children after one year of treatment. Method: a retrospective observational study in celiac children attended at outpatient’s Gastroenterology office in Holguín Pediatric Hospital, from April 2008 to October 2010 was carried out. Forty five patients with positive tissue anti-transglutaminase serology, followed by jejunal biopsy, and nutritional and histological re-assessment at one year of treatment, comprised the sample. Results: mean age was 5.6 ± 3.41 years. 57.8% were female patients. The growth velocity average was higher in boys, and unusual isolated high values were observed among both sex.  The most affected indicator was weight for height (42.2% undernourished). Partial atrophy was prevalent (51.1 %). After treatment the frequencies of low weight and low height were smaller (11.1 and 24.4% respectively), and weight for age and weight for height Z scores significantly increased (p<0.05). The most severe grades of atrophy, showed a significant improved change (p<0.05). Nutritional weight for height status enhanced in 80.0 %, and atrophy in 42.2 %, with complete recovery to normality in only 4.44 %. Conclusions: except for the stature as a group characteristic, the nutritional change was favorable. There was improvement of the villous atrophy although scarce recovery; the latter pointing out to probable dietary transgressions or a longer time of required assessment
