Abstract

Introduction: the medical abortion is an effective option in the intentional and outpatient abortion in the first trimester. Objective: to demonstrate the efficacy of misoprostol in end of pregnancy. Method: an intervention study was performed in adolescents and women who were attended at Curettage service of Vladimir I. Lenin Hospital, Holguin, to end their pregnancy by the pharmacological method, with the use of misoprostol in doses of 600 mg. The universe / sample comprised 31 women who gave their informed consent, as well as the consent of the Maternal and Child Deputy Director. Criteria approved by the Ministry of Health for the use of vaginal misoprostol for induction of abortion were considered. Variables were studied such as: maternal age, time to expulsion, complications and outcome of the intervention. Results: predominated pregnant adolescents and young women, the most common age ranges were between 20 and 29 years (64.5%) and 15 to 19 with 32.3%, mainly from Holguin municipality. After misoprostol, the largest number of cases, 27 (87.1%) aborted within 12 hours. Conclusions: the use of vaginal misoprostol was an effective and reliable method as an alternative to abortion in the first trimester.
