GRASS HERNANDEZ, Nersa María; DIAZ ROJAS, Pedro A; MARQUEZ RUBIO, Amuny  and  ZALDIVAR ACOSTA, Yuliet. Clinical and Morphostereologic Characterization of Lung Epithelial Malignant Tumors Diagnosed by Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy. ccm [online]. 2016, vol.20, n.3, pp. 517-530. ISSN 1560-4381.

Introduction: lung cancer is a serious health problem worldwide, early diagnosis is the main factor for successful treatment. Among the diagnostic is especially important aspiration biopsy fine needle, which provides an effective diagnosis in short time; while morphometry and stereology allow to confirm whether the interpretation by the pathologist is accurate and supports the diagnosis. Objective: to characterize clinical and morphostereologic lung neoplasms, diagnosed by fine needle aspiration biopsy. Methods: a cross-sectional research was conducted at the University Hospital Vladimir Ilich Lenin General of Holguin, from January 2010 to December 2011, the sample consisted of 80 patients. Of their medical records the variables studied were selected; cytological specimens were processed with hematoxylin and eosin; images from different fields were taken for measurement of morphometric and stereological indicators, with the application of computer ImageJ National Institutes of Health. Results: fifty three patients were diagnosed with cancer (66.2%), predominated in males, the age group between 60-69 years was the most affected one with 45 cases for 56.3%, the small cell carcinoma was the prevailing cytological type with 20 cases (25%); 67% of cases were smokers, while respiratory symptoms were reported by 50% of patients. The values of the area, perimeter and nuclear volume were higher in non-small cell carcinoma, with significant differences between the groups; circularity showed little variation. Conclusion: the studied morphostereologic indicators are useful to establish more accurate cytologic diagnoses among groups.
