Abstract

Introduction: dengue is a mosquito-borne infection that occurs in all tropical and subtropical regions of the planet. In recent years, transmission has increased predominantly in urban and semi-urban areas and has become a major public health problem. Objective: to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of dengue in collaborators in Bolivar state from January to December 2012. Method: a retrospective descriptive observational study was performed, in collaborators who suffered from dengue during the period from January to December 2012; the universe was of 191 cases and variables of interest that allowed characterizing the disease were used. Results: the female sex (56.5%), the group of 25-29 years (28.3%) and the statistical week 10 predominated. The medical mission was the most affected one (75.5%), mainly the health technicians (34.0%) and physicians (24.6%). Sucre municipality was the one with the highest rate, with 34.0 per 100 employees. The most frequent clinical manifestations were fever and headache (100.0%), dengue fever without symptoms and signs of alarm predominated (94.2%). Among the risk factors, the highest percentages corresponded to the non-use of mosquito nets (100%) and the presence of breeding grounds (94.2%). Conclusions: dengue virus infection is a health problem in Cuban collaborators living in Venezuela, predominantly in the female sex and in the age group of 25 to 29 years, the medical and sports mission contributed more than three Four quarters of the total cases, at the expense of technicians and doctors, did not constitute serious forms a health problem.
