Abstract

REDONDO PINO, Laura Rosa; MACIQUES RODRIGUEZ, Juana Elvira; PEREZ MUNOZ, María Emoe  and  LICEA PUIG, Manuel. Association of diabetes mellitus and simple chronic glaucoma. Rev Cubana Endocrinol [online]. 2013, vol.24, n.3, pp. 314-322. ISSN 1561-2953.

Introduction: chronic simple glaucoma and retinopathy due to diabetes mellitus are two of the main causes of blindness worldwide. Diabetes is a risk factor for chronic simple glaucoma since it increases susceptibility of the retinal cells that accelerate the onset of glaucoma or worsens it. The eye with proliferative diabetic retinopathy is more resistant to ocular hypertension in addition to the known protective effect of glaucoma on the proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Development: to identify the association between diabetes mellitus and chronic simple glaucoma for which a current literature review was made on the topic of diabetes mellitus and chronic simple glaucoma. Conclusions: there are controversial criteria about the association of diabetes mellitus and chronic simple glaucoma. Both diseases may be unnoticed, so it is necessary to promote early detection programs with the involvement of a multidisciplinary medical team.

Keywords : diabetes mellitus; diabetic retinopathy; chronic simple glaucoma.
