Abstract

Introduction: Given the increase in life expectancy at birth, the growing addiction of women by tobacco, the figure of passive smokers and the need to eliminate this practice make necessary to determine the repercussion of passive smoking in the climateric syndrome. Methods: An explanatory, quantitative and cross-sectional, observational, of case-control study was conducted in sample selected of mean age women of No. 33 family consultation room from the "Joel Benitez" University Polyclinic in Cauto Cristo municipality. A survey was administered including the Kopperman`test to characterize the climateric syndrome in passive smokers women and non-smokers from January to March, 2011. Results: Menopause age was present in six women aged under 39 and all of them were passive smoking. The symptoms called neurovegetative were more frequent in menopause and the lack of smoking practice was a protector factor for this ailment in particular the insomnia. The psychological symptoms were similar in both groups with predominance of depression and the melancholy in women before menopause. The arthralgia was the more mentioned symptom without differences between to practice or not of smoking. Conclusions: The age of menopause was earliest in the case of passive smoking. The neurovegetative symptoms prevailed in the menopause and the lack of smoking is a risk protector in the case of insomnia. The psychological symptoms are not influenced by the passive smoking and included in this category of critical it is higher in non smoker women.
