Scientific publications on Stomatology in the Gaceta Médica Espirituana

The final step of all scientific research is the publication of its results in the form of an article in a specialized journal because this is one of the main means of disseminating knowledge, and if published in indexed journals, this constitutes an indicator of quality.

Stomatology research in Sancti Spíritus province shows important progress in the last decade and for the publication of its scientific results, the Gaceta Médica Espirituana (GME), a journal certified by Citma resolution since 2009, has played an important role, ¹ it belongs to Group II, according to the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education; ² for being indexed in: Cumed, Red de la Ciencia cubana, Lilacs, Latindex, Medigraph, Ebsco, e-Journals [REDIB (Red Iberoamericana de Innovación y Conocimiento Científico)], MIAR, Actualidad Iberoamericana, CiteFactor, Science Library Index , Scientific Indexing Services, WorldCat, Directory of Research Journals Indexingy, SciELO and DOAJ.

It is therefore necessary to determine the trend of the scientific publications by Stomatology professors in this journal.

Chart 1 Trend in scientific publications by Stomatology professors in the GME. 2009-2019 period.  

Chart 1 shows that the number of Stomatology articles published in the GME between 2014 and 2019 increased compared to the 2009-2013 period; however, it can be seen in the last period (2016 to 2019) that the number of publications in the specialty decreased. Situation that was analyzed by the group of professors and some of the reasons state encountered difficulties during the accreditation process of the Stomatology career in 2015 (low number of publications in indexed journals) so, as a strategy, the professionals searched for publishing in some other magazines.

In 2013, 2015 and 2017, the largest number of articles were published, the most represented typologies were: originals, editorials and case reports respectively.

The most read articles have been: "Chlorhexidine, structural bases and applications in stomatology" with 8573 readings in 2009, "Mini implants, an option for anchoring in orthodontics" with 1448 in 2011 and in this same year the case report: "Magnetotherapy in myofacial pain" with 1158 readings.

Based on this analysis, the need to carry out studies about the publications by Stomatology professors in some other national journals and also internationally is recommended.
