Abstract

Background:

The worsening of the psychoemotional state resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic has been related to bruxism.

Objective:

To describe the most frequent signs and symptoms, the degree of bruxism affectation and anxiety state in patients with bruxism during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methodology:

Observational, descriptive, retrospective study between January 2019 and 2020 at the Doctor´s Office No. 10 of the Northern Area of Sancti Spíritus. 35 patients diagnosed with bruxism were included, chosen by systematic random sampling, according to inclusion criteria. Theoretical and empirical methods were used to evaluate the variables age, sex, anxiety state, signs, symptoms and degree of bruxism affectation.

Results:

Female sex represented 62.9 % and the 35-60 age group 45.7 %. The most frequent symptom of bruxism was pain in the masticatory muscles (88.6 %). It changed from 28.6 % to 65.7 % patients with grade II bruxism and from 42.9 % medium anxiety state to 80 %.

Conclusions:

During the COVID-19 pandemic there was an increase in the anxiety state and the degree of bruxism affectation. Pain in the masticatory muscles was the most frequent symptom in patients with bruxism.
