Abstract

VIDAL OLIVERA, Vania Mireya  and  GONZALEZ-ABREU FERNANDEZ, Rafael. Surface water and groundwater in the Great Wetland North of Ciego de Ávila. RIHA [online]. 2013, vol.34, n.3, pp. 57-69. ISSN 1680-0338.

The study of the rate of movement of water inputs and outputs is a key requirement to know about any external hydrological impact on wetland ecosystems. To investigate the relationship of the great wetland of northern Ciego de Avila with ground and surface waters of the northern watershed of the province was the main objective of this work, through the preparation of a conceptual theoretical model where the ecosystem is divided into hydrological zones and prevailing water transfer mechanisms are identified. The observed hydrological regime indicated the existence of recharge and discharge between the wetland and the underlying aquifer because the latter is formed with a geological structure that allows water exchange.

Keywords : aquifer; hydrographic basins; wetland; water transfer.
