Abstract

ALVAREZ DUARTE, Héctor et al. Advantages of the ozone therapy in neuro-infective diabetic foot patients. Rev Cubana Angiol Cir Vasc. [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.1, pp. 12-21. ISSN 1682-0037.

Introduction: ozone is an allotropic variety of the oxygen with the greatest antioxidant power, which provides it with bactericidal and fungicidal properties, and makes it useful in the local treatment of wounded or infected lesions. Objective: to evaluate the advantages of the ozone therapy in type 2 diabetic patients with neuro-infectious diabetic foot. Methods: an intervention-type experimental study of type 2 diabetic patients admitted to the Institute of Angiology and Vascular Surgery and diagnosed with neuro-infectious diabetic foot. The sample was made up of 150 patients, randomly divided into three treatment groups: Group I treated only with ozone, Group II treated only with antibiotics, and Group III treated with the combination of both therapies. Ozone was locally applied in the affected area and systematically through the rectum. Results: the frequency of improvement of the lesions exceeded 75 %, higher in those who received the combined treatment (86 %) and not significantly different from that of those patients treated only with ozone (84 %). Major amputations of lower limbs did not exceed 9 % and the average stay at hospital of the patients under antibiotic treatment (35 days) did not significantly differ from that of those treated only with ozone. Conclusions: ozone therapy is beneficial as a therapeutic variant or as adjuvant to the antibiotic therapy in type 2 diabetic patients with neuro-infectious diabetic foot.
